The Lake Arrowhead Yacht Club is nestled in the San Bernadino Mountains and has been in continuous operation since 1932. Lake Arrowhead is a mere 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles but feels a world apart. Since its founding, the Lake Arrowhead Yacht Club has offered family fun in a safe and healthy mountain environment. Parents can feel secure that their children are learning sports, developing social skills and making new friends while surrounded by the uncomparable beauty of this mountain paradise.
The primary function of the Club is Fun, Family and Sailing. Their are four sailing fleets, C Scows, Hobies, Gerrys and Holders.
C Scows: The name 'scow' comes from the Dutch word 'schouw', one of several classes of flat-ottomed boats sailed in Dutch waters for over 400 years. The boats were first created in Holland to navigate more shallow passage ways, but soon adapted to more diverse waters.
US-built boats looked to create a faster model and thus the modern MC Scow was born. A lighter body and larger sail helped to increase speed and make a better racing boat. MC Scows conquer the waves and winds of Lake Arrowhead with ease and provide a memorable racing experience.
Hobie Cat: A Hobie Cat is a smaller catamaran sailboat made by the Hobie Cat Company in Oceanside, California. In the late 1960's Hobie started to design Hobie sailboats and continue to do so to this day.
Hobie cats are known for their speed and grace on the water. The Hobie fleet at Lake Arrowhead is ever-growing and is full of dedicated members who love to sail. Hobie races are always exciting to watch and participating in them offers sailors an opportunity to maneuver the waves of one of the most beautiful lakes in Southern California.
Holders: Holders are smaller sailboats that are perfect for youth who want to learn how to skipper a boat. Sailing lessons are offered for children of all ages to get them started on the lake. Holder races are held every weekend and offer a great learning experience for anyone wanting to get out on the lake.
